I bet many of you are wondering how I came up with the twisted, dark, and entertaining story I did. Well, let's just say I was influenced by many things and got inspired to create my own version of Final Fantasy X-3 since Square Enix is not making one plus there is quite a story behind it.
Once upon a time, when I was 12 years old, it was the first time I played FFX and then played FFX-2, I began to think that maybe there should be a third story. The funny thing is, I thought of a FFX-3 before even finishing FFX-2, but I didn't really an idea for a story yet. Believe or not I had a dream, Yuna, Rikku and Paine were fighting alongside three other girls against an evil Guado girl with an eye patch named Mckelly. That's right you guys, it all started from a weird dream I had when I was 12, not making this up.
So the three girls were pretty much nameless but they were the allies of YRP and they happened to be sisters. So I decided to name them myself, Simone as the oldest, Nina as the second and Chelsey as the youngest, being 12 at the time I wasn't very creative with names and I thought it was cool to name a character after myself then. I had thought about changing their names to something better for the new version of FFX-3: Simone to Lenne, Nina would be kept the same since to me it is a good ff girl name, and Chelsey to Lilia. But when writing the recent FFX-3 story currently posted on fanfiction.net, I realized it just wouldn't feel right. I know their names are generic but I don't know, it just didn't feel right. I know naming a character after yourself is kinda frowned upon but to be honest, Chelsey from my fanfic and I are VERY different, trust me on this one. As long as the character is not you, it's all good right?
Okay so the girls were sisters of course but they were originally Yuna's new allies, not her daughters like they are now. They were part of some sphere hunting organization called the Eaglewings, and were at first rivals with the Gullwings but eventually they would work together and fight Mckelly and the Mcclouds. Tidus would be there as well, but I don't think I gave him a very important role. So they all basically went on a sphere hunting journey of sorts oh and Seymour came back to get revenge on Yuna. Oh and Mckelly wasn't Seymour's daughter, she just worked for him. Sam was also a character too, but he was working for the Mcclouds until he met Chelsey and fell for her. I'm not sure what else there was but that was the very first idea for FFX-3.
About a year later when I was 13, I realized the idea was pretty crappy. I decided that the story should take place many years later, our heroes are living peaceful lives after saving the world and that new characters would take center stage. So I thought hmmm maybe my characters Simone, Nina and Chelsey should be the daughters of Tidus and Yuna! And that they can save Spira from the latest threat. I had Seymour come back, and Mckelly was his daughter since she was a Guado like Seymour. Simone, Nina and Chelsey would still be sphere hunters in the Eaglewings group along their their friends, Yava, Melanie, Osric, Vidina and Sam would join up later just like he does in the recent version.
Overtime I started coming up with more and more ideas including Shadows taking over Spira, the Shadow Palo etc. I soon wrote down all my ideas and then decided to write it all as dialogue form. I had posted the dialogue form of the story on an old website I had long ago but when I was about 15 I decided to write it like a novel and post it on fanfiction.net. There were maybe about 25 chapters? But it was nothing compared to the version I have up now. I had only received 14 reviews and only 2000 hits, heck I think there was less. I had kept it up there and then 2 years later when my writing had improved greatly, I decided to take a look at the fanfic and realized it was a piece of crap. I decided to rewrite it and fix up some things to get more people to read and to make it a much more interesting story to read.
I had a completely different story planned out than the one I do now, it seemed more and more ideas kept popping in my head when recreating FFX-3. I took it into a whole new direction filled with twists, inner monologues with the characters and a much darker approach. I tried to keep some things the same such as the Shadows trying to claim Spira, the Underworld, Timothy and Serena's story, Sam's past, the girls being powerful entities etc. But with that I added many new things like the Angels, the Cetra, the Shadows already being on Spira instead of waiting in the Underworld until near the end of the fic, and much more character development. There are many mythological references as well, I am a sucker for mythology and I just had to name characters after mythological creatures and figures.
Now to the group of teens who fight the Shadows in the story, Simone, Nina, Chelsey, Osric, Sam, Yava, Melanie and Vidina. I know to many they seem like annoying teenagers, but I made them that way on purpose. I had planned for them to grow and develop over the course of the story because really they have no choice to given the situation they're in. Another reason is that post-FFX-2 I saw Spira being a carefree world where the youth didn't worry and were much happier than their elders. Technology would be advancing quickly and Spira's lifestyle would have changed drastically, so if you wonder why the teens seem like modern teens that's exactly why. Although, I kinda wish I didn't have the entire group already know each other in the beginning, that is one thing I definitely should have fixed when beginning the rewrite. But I worked with it and I had began to improve in my character developing skills and if you've read the most recent chapters, our heroes have definitely changed.
Okay now onto influences besides mythology which is an obvious influence. I was quite influenced by anime, and the real world to be honest, and how people can be total assholes to each other and how those who are different are shunned(like the Fiend speakers). I know we live in a cruel world but there are many good things about it as well, there is no such thing as a perfect world and that was one of the main themes in FFX-3. Humans can be pests but at the same time they can be loving and very creative, so do they really need to be exterminated because they are not perfect beings? Another thing discussed in the story. I wanted this story to be thought-provoking but at the same time a good read filled with suspense, twists and human drama.
Last thing I want to talk about is the main character and narrator: Simone. I will admit, she used to be a huge Mary-sue*shudders at the thought.* Back when I created her, I wanted her to be this bad-ass, cool tomboy who wasn't scared of anything(again I was 12 when I created her). I didn't really know what a Mary-sue was until later on and yet my main character just happened to be one. I wanted her to be fearless, tough, and so many things but that's not a good thing, she didn't really have flaws and I didn't really notice that until a reviewer pointed it out in my recent version. Pretty sad if you ask me, so I decided to change her before she got worse and became completely unlikable, and lucky for me I was able to develop her character and she has began to really grow.
Okay well, that is the story of how Final Fantasy X-3: Rise of the Shadows came to be the story that it is today. I'm glad that many people enjoy it and are in love with the characters, feeling a connection with them. Will I create yet another version? I highly doubt it since I'm quite impressed with what I have now. If there were some things I wanted to fix it would be: Not having all the teens know each other already, better names for Tidus and Yuna's daughters, but I think everything else would be kept the same plot-wise. So if you have comments, post them in the guest book and if you haven't read my fanfic yet I'd really appreciate it if you did! 8-) click here to read it!
